I'm trying to install Windows ME on a new system (AMD 900 Mhz processor) with an older (and slower) 2GB IDE hard-drive.
Everytime that Windows restarts, during the installation process, the file-system on the hard-drive seems to get corrupted.
Microsoft has a fix, but the fix can be applied only on a working system, so it's a "Catch 22" situation -- cannot apply the fix until the system is installed, and cannot install the system until the fix is applied.
Also, in the many attempts that I've made to try to install, if I somehow have been apply to apply the patch, and have further updated the Windows Registry to force Windows to wait longer (5 seconds, rather than the 2 seconds defaulted in the patch) before shutting-down, the code within the patch does _NOT_ always seem to be invoked, when forced to restart during the installation of updates (either from Microsoft Update) or while installing third-party software (DisKeeper Lite).
So, after rebooting during that installation, the file-system is corrupt, and SCANDISK cannot "fix" the corruption (I get many 'DIRnnnnn' directories, and hundreds of 'FILEnnnn.CHK' files).
Obviously, if the file-system can be trashed by a simple shutdown or reboot of Windows, I cannot use this computer.
Any ideas, other than hoping that a newer, faster, hard-drive will bypass the problem?
Thanks.

Thank you for your question. I would suggest running a diagnostic on the system hardware - corruption of HDD data may indicate a faulty HDD, HDD controller or possibly RAM. Provided that the hardware checks out, new HDD will most likely fix your problem. I'd installed WindowsME many times without any problems on AMD systems ranging from 350 to 2000 Mhz. In the rare cases where an install would not complete without a patch applied, I'd install windows on a different system (Intel CPU) and apply the patch, then put the HDD into the AMD system - as a way of getting around this problem.
Good luck, and do let us know how this turns out for you.
